International Conference on STI and Development

STEPI hosts the 'International Conference on Science, Technology, Innovation and Development' to promote the recognition of STI capacity building as a critical area for cooperative development to address various progressive challenges based on partnership. This conference, which was first held in 2015, provides a new opportunity to share information on STI for decision makers and experts at home and abroad.

STEPI, jointly with World Bank Korea Office, has successfully hosted the 3rd International Conference on STI and Development, on the theme of ‘Cluster, Industrialization and Regional Development’. Eight partners, including universities, academic societies, and international organizations, participated as session organizers for the Conference, which was sponsored by the Ministry of Science and ICT and attended by more than 200 people.

The Conference served as a platform to share Korea’s development experience as it achieved substantial industrialization development through various types of clusters. The Conference also fostered in-depth discussions on Industrialization, Innovation and Infrastructures through the eight sessions.

STEPI and World Bank Korea Office will promote cooperation on STI with partner countries. Also, STEPI will continue to strengthen development cooperation with the countries, utilizing cooperation from partner institutions.

STEPI, in conjunction with the World Bank Group Korea Office, held the “Second International Conference on Science, Technology, Innovation (STI) and Development” on September 29 under the topic of “Innovation for Shared Prosperity: Addressing Development Challenges through STI Capacity Building.”  
 
At the conference, presentations were given regarding actual cases as well as on the importance of resolving issues in developing countries by reinforcing STI capabilities. This conference was divided into five sessions: "Enabling Conditions for STI Capacity Building," "Tools for Strengthening STI Capacity," "The Roles of Innovation Drivers in Strengthening the Innovation System," "Tackling Development Challenges with STI Solutions," and "Addressing Development Challenges through STI Capacity Building."   
 
STEPI and the World Bank anticipate that this conference will help to illuminate the importance of STI capabilities in resolving problems faced in developing countries, and to provide a new venue for developmental cooperation in STI fields. In addition, in keeping with the emergence of STI as a core axis of post-2015 development agendas, this conference has contributed to presenting directions for practical STI developmental cooperation and support.

The Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI), in conjunction with The World Bank Group, held the 1st International Conference on Science, Technology, Innovation(STI) and Development under the subject of “Innovation for Shared Prosperity”.

At the conference, presentations were given regarding case studies of the actual use of STI for national projects in developing countries. These presentations included, “Green Technology to Counter Weather Changes in Developing Countries” and “Ways to Utilize ICT Technology for Innovation and Regional Development”, with explorations of the desired models and ways they might be supported.

This conference served as a venue for raising the importance of science and technology policies, opening a new horizon in cooperation in these fields. With the recent emergence of STI as a core post-2015 developmental agenda, participants included many organizations interested in exploring ways to support the development of Official Development Assistance (ODA)
