Creating New Stories and Alternative Futures for Asia:
Beyond the Factory and the Rule of Big Men
The conference seeks to explore new stories and futures for Asia, looking beyond the factory and the rule of big men, and toward economic democracy and wise leadership. Beginning in the period of modernization and industrialization in the 20th century, Asian countries imported an image of the future from the West and realized it through great efforts, sacrificing their traditions, cultural legacies and natural environments along the way. They paved roadways and built factories in order to urbanize their lands. In the name of faster development, dictatorship, patriarchy, and closed elitism in Asia were intentionally and unintentionally allowed to take root. The future was engineered.
But today, Asian nations and communities face new opportunities to decolonize their futures and create alternative stories. This conference seeks to bring about a greater awareness and understanding of the differences and similarities in the experiences that the peoples of Asia and the Pacific have on the development of their societies and work toward inventing new futures, new possibilities. Stories or narratives help us move from the details of economic and social planning to the broader picture of what the future can be like.
This is the third year of the Asia-Pacific futurists network meeting, with the first two having been hosted by Tamkang University in Taiwan. Previous years focused on case studies of the use of foresight in transforming the region and if futures thinking differed foundationally across regions. Hosted in Seoul this year, the conference intends to take a broader and deeper approach, seeing to further decolonize and create authentic Asian futures in a climate where authenticity in itself is being challenged.
